There are two factors to consider when choosing a time to visit Tanzania, the wildlife and the crowds. For the best wildlife viewing, visit Tanzania during the dry seasons of December through February and July through September. To avoid the crowds, visit in May, June or November.
Before booking your international flight, it’s best to have a draft safari itinerary already in hand, as internal East African traveling costs can be reduced with some careful planning. For example, if you would like to see the gorillas in Rwanda, then it’s best to fly into Nairobi, Kenya to start your holiday. If your safari is finishing up with Zanzibar, then it’s best to fly back home out of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. If you are doing both, then it’s a good idea to look into an international airline which will allow you to fly into Nairobi and out of Dar es Salaam for little or no extra cost. Together, we can save you money by being clever and innovative regarding your itinerary, so you can afford that extra glass of wine whilst you overlook a river full of elephants.
There are three ways of getting to Tanzania:
Fly directly into Mt Kilimanjaro International Airport in northern Tanzania. This is the closest airport to Arusha. Rollingstone Safaris can help organise your transfer from the airport to Arusha (which should take about one hour) upon arrival.
Fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania. Upon arrival, you will need to either fly domestically (1 hour) or bus it (10 hours) to Arusha.
Fly into Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya.
There are then 3 modes of transport from Nairobi, Kenya to Arusha, Tanzania:
Join a twice daily scheduled shuttle bus with other commuters via the Namanga Border. The trip takes about 6 hours.
Organise a private vehicle and be driven to Arusha via Namanga border. Rollingstone Safaris can help organise such a vehicle for you.
Fly from Nairobi to Mt Kilimanjaro, Tanzania. The flight takes about 1 hour. Rollingstone safaris can help organise this for you (along with the 1 hour drive from Kilimanjaro airport to Arusha upon arrival).
Visitors are required to have a valid passport and for those countries which require it, a visa. Please ensure that your passport is valid for at least six months from the date of entry and that you have at least one blank page in your passport (the back page does not count).
Most countries allow you to get the visa on arrival. However often visa’s can also be obtained before travelling (your travel agent may give you advice about this). Even though its more expensive getting it beforehand, it can save time as you don’t have to fill out the visa application forms on arrival into the country.
Fees for visa’s are subject to change, so it is important to verify before entering the country. Normally all that is required if applying for the visa on arrival is to fill out a short form (issued on arrival) and pay the visa fee in US$ cash. No passport photos or additional documentation are normally necessary to purchase a visa on arrival. Make sure that USD notes used to pay for the visa are relatively newly made (for example are of 2005 series or higher) as notes printed in 2004 or older may be rejected. Its also good to pay in larger denominations like $50 or $100USD notes.
Tanzania: Yes, it is possible to purchase a tourist visa at the airport/road border as you enter Tanzania. A single entry tourist visa for Australians for example is currently priced at US$ 50 and is valid for three months. A single entry three month tourist visa for Americans is US$100.
Check with your doctor to get current recommendations and advice. Anti-malarial tablets are strongly recommended.
We also recommend the following immunizations:
Typhoid: This vaccination is good for three years.
Hepatitis A: Should be just taken prior to departure, as immunity becomes less effective with time.
Hepatitis B: Is a viral disease transmitted mainly through blood or sexual contact.
Meningitis: The vaccine for meningitis is called Menamune. It can cost up to $100 at clinics that don’t administer it frequently, or as a little as 1/3 of that cost elsewhere. You may want to shop around. While this disease occurs only sporadically, it is fatal unless treated immediately.
Yellow Fever: Proof of Yellow Fever vaccination is often asked for at points of entry in East Africa as well as Zanzibar.
Update re: Yellow Fever is that its not required for Tanzania but if you don’t get it, good if you bring something from below sites to show on arrival if asked why you don’t have it.
Health recommendation: CDC does not recommend yellow fever vaccine for most travelers to Tanzania. However, you might consider this vaccine if you are staying a long time or will be heavily exposed to mosquitoes.
Country entry requirement: The government of Tanzania requires proof of yellow fever vaccination upon arrival if you are traveling from a country with risk of yellow fever (this does not include the US – see complete list: Countries with risk of yellow fever virus (YFV) transmission.)
For more information on recommendations and requirements, see yellow fever recommendations and requirements for Tanzania. Your doctor can help you decide if this vaccine is right for you based on your travel plans. Found here: http://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/tanzania
Yes! We strongly advise you to secure Travel Insurance for accident, sickness, emergency medical, baggage loss and trip cancellation.
Airport taxes are often not included in the price of internal Tanzania flights. Be sure to bring extra US dollars with you to pay airport taxes, which range from $5 to $25 USD per flight. If we organise the bookings for you, we can help advise you when this is needed.
